Living wills are also known as advance directives. Both terms refer to legal documents that express your wishes for medical care in situations where you're unable to make decisions yourself due to illness or incapacity.
These documents typically outline your preferences for life-sustaining treatments, such as artificial respiration, tube feeding, and resuscitation.
Having a living will helps ensure your medical care aligns with your values and relieves your family from making difficult choices on your behalf.
While a living will focuses primarily on end-of-life care decisions, an advance directive can be broader. It may also include appointing a healthcare proxy (someone you trust to make medical decisions for you) through a durable power of attorney for healthcare.
