The documents you need depends on your income sources and tax situation. At minimum, everyone filing taxes will need:
- Social Security number or tax ID
- Income statements (W-2, 1099s)
- Prior year tax return
- Bank account & routing numbers for refund deposits/payments
Additional documents if they apply:
Self-Employed: Records of 1099 income, business expenses
Retired: 1099-R, SSA-1099 for retirement income
Landlord: Rental property income/expenses
Health Care: 1095-A if enrolled in Marketplace plan, medical expenses
College Students: 1098-T, educational expenses
